Dr. Akilah Cadet is the Founder of Change Cadet, a consulting company offering coaching, strategic planning, innovation, and diversity training for individuals or companies. Change Cadet came about after stress from her previous job caused severe depression. She realized that it’s imperative to spend time working in an environment where you feel valued and appreciated or it will negatively affect your personal life. She used this as a turning point and decided to start her own consulting company.
Severe depression included making it hard to function in day-to-day life. Everything was so dark. Suicidal thoughts. How did she get out of depression? A two week trip to Thailand was the beginning. Time or money was not ample but she made the time and found the money. She got a new spark, fueled a fire to make change and got the power to say NO. “If you’re not happy, GTFO” says Dr. Cadet. “Get the F*@! OUT, It’s a domino effect into the rest of your life.” She also found a way to love herself fully. Once she did that, she felt unstoppable. “I just really believe in myself. Every day you have a choice to be your best self. No matter what.”
Get up, be amazing, go back to bed ~ The caption on her Instagram page. Fitting as no matter what is going on, she gets up and is amazing. Coming out of depression she wants to inspire women, especially women of color. During coaching sessions she makes you believe that beautiful things can happen, that every day can be filled with purpose and passion. Her work now brings her joy and she does whatever she can to help others experience this joy in their work life (Which spills over to the personal life!)
Dr. Cadet’s Top Tips:
1 - Say no to the no’s and yes to the yes’s. If something doesn’t align with your values, say no, no matter what. If something interests you, say yes! It can take you down a new path and open up joy you didn’t know was available.
2 - Have a mantra ready when you’re going into a big situation. Hers is “Slay” or “Always stay humble, the best revenge is your paper”
3 - Self love and affirmations are key
In just one conversation with Dr. Cadet you can’t miss her sense of humor, thoughtful, straight forward conversation and the fact that she slays w/ the power of Beyonce (True story, as it was transmitted during a concert as Beyonce touched her hand!).
Akilah’s message to women is so appropriate, as this interview was done on Equal Pay Day……”Ask for more money and You are amazing!” From personal experience I can say after one coaching session with her you will walk out of the room feeling that way. Thank you Akilah for your vulnerability and candor, your contribution to making women feel amazing, and in helping entrepreneurs of color perform at their best.
